Effects of Perceived Childhood Traumatic Experience on Interpersonal Anxiety and Depression Mediated by Internalized Shame

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify effects of perceived childhood traumatic experience on interpersonal anxiety and depression mediated by internalized shame of college students. Subjects included 467 college students from five universities in J city of Jeonbuk Province. Major findings are as follows. First, positive correlations were found between perceived childhood traumatic experience and interpersonal anxiety, depression, and internalized shame. The higher childhood traumatic experience was, the higher interpersonal anxiety, depression, and internalized shame were. Second, internalized shame worked as a mediating variable in the positive correlation between perceived childhood traumatic experience and interpersonal anxiety and depression. These findings imply that appropriate exploration into internalized shame and counseling intervention could be crucial in counseling and treatment of interpersonal anxiety and depression of college students who have childhood traumatic experience. Limitations and future research directions of the study are also discussed.
